On October 31, the Independent Institute will be co-hosting a conference in at Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA) in Buenos Aires titled “Dollarization: A Solution for Argentina’s Economy?” The presentations will be a partly in Spanish and partly in English.
Sadly, Argentina is one of the three nations with the highest inflation in the world. Facing one of the most pressing economic crises in recent history, more than 40% of its population lives in poverty. Dollarizing the Argentinian economy will be one of many reforms Argentina will have to adopt before its staggering economic crisis can be resolved.
Independent Institute Senior Fellow Steve H. Hanke and Research Fellow and Director of ElIndependent.org Gabriel Gasave will both speak at this event. Hanke will present a proposal to end the peso, close the Argentine Central Bank, and establish the dollar as the country’s currency. Gasave will offer the theoretical foundations for this approach and point to two successful cases of dollarization in Latin America: Ecuador and El Salvador.
We delighted that our principles of independence, reason, and human dignity are crossing international boundaries and having real impact. We hope the best for Argentina’s economic revival and are committed to providing intellectual resources for liberty-minded policymakers around the world!
